We all know that most gadgets if not all require a resetting every once in a while. We also know that machines especially in industries, have a schedule for regular servicing and maintenance. But we probably do not know that what resetting and servicing are for gadgets and machines respectively, solitude is for the soul!

Solitude is the quality or state of being alone. It is the practice of temporarily withdrawing to privacy for spiritual purposes.

The world can be busy and noisy and we need to learn to withdraw, recharge and refocus!

Our Lord Jesus Christ always withdrew from the activities and demands of ministry just to be alone with his father(Mark 1:35, Matthew 14:23, Mark 6:31-32).

Henri Nouwen (served as a priest, Professor and author)said, “Without solitude, it is virtually impossible to lead a spiritual life.” Is it possible for one to practice solitude? Yes! It can be practiced for periods ranging from a few minutes to days.

What are the benefits?

– Solitude helps set the stage for us to clearly hear God’s voice – 1 Kings 19:9-18. Our listening is improved in moments of silence.

– We receive rest for our souls when we voluntarily pull away from this busy world and reconnect with our maker. Augustine said, “Thou has made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”

– Solitude interrupts our usual rhythm/pattern in a good way and as a result, we find clarity about life’s Issues.

When is the last time you practiced solitude? Is it even that easy for you? Try it out! It is an important practice.

Have a blessed weekend
